One of the practices that has shown great success for water quality protection and improvements are rain gardens. Rain gardens are bioretention areas that take stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces such as roof tops, streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. Rain gardens have been promoted through meetings, workshops, presentations, and through rain garden demonstrations. Rain gardens were relatively unknown before 2002 and are now widely discussed, written about, and even implemented here in central Iowa.
